Introducing Little PIM Foreign Language and Fun

"Little Pim, What is that?" Little Pim is a foreign language immersion DVD series for babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers. Each program is available individually or in a discounted three-disc set in Spanish, French, Chinese, English (ESL), Japanese, Hebrew, and Italian.

In a more simple manner of explaining things, Little Pim is an absolute in a child learning a second language before they are even past their pre-school stage in life! In our next section you will learn why this is so important and just how it is accomplished. Little Pim has taken a more direct approach targeting a specific age group and has been proven from our own evaluation as well as that of our independent evaluators.



FACT: "Children from infant to pre-kinder age level can learn up to 4 different languages on average. After this age level the ability for acquisition of new secondary languages is reduced significantly."




...a Perfect Age Range, ...a Perfect Medium Of Learning

As stated earlier, Little Pim is designed specifically for babies to pre-school age groups. This is a perfect age range to work with. Children in this age range have the highest and most rapid rate of learning capability and adaption to environmental stimulus. Little Pim uses total language immersion as a teaching method which serves as a perfect medium for learning. Combine that with the age group for which it has been designed and you have a product that provides a solid assurance of success and self-improvement for a child.

Although we can speak of all the details about a product being the best solution, etc., at the same time we need to provide evidence to validate our statements. In the words to follow and in our consumer hands on product evaluation section, that evidence will be provided.

The proof is in the pudding!

In the same vein of thought of what once was a common phrase, "The proof is in the pudding!", we have put Little Pim to the test in a real-life education environment to provide unquestionable proof of its effectiveness and superiority to other products. We took "Little Pim for Spanish" to a licensed pre-school in the State of California and another in Texas along with two other competing products. The products were submitted to the pre-schools back in January '09 and the period of evaluation study at the pre-schools ended 10 March, 2009.

After careful study of the video tapes from all phases of this evaluation study by our evaluation staff, combined with the two directors of the pre-schools, it was established without a doubt that Little Pim did as claimed. According to the results we looked over, Little Pim Spanish edition established a very strong improvement in the acquisition of second language skills from the use of it. As a matter of fact, this was established in all of the pre-school class environments at both pre-school facilities. All age groups demonstrated improvement of second language skills. There are appeared to be no negative impact in any manner with reading and writing skills from their native lingual skills. These results are purely from our own evaluation studies over a limited period of weeks.

Many colleges use the learning method of total language immersion for teaching yet it is an established fact that young children, prior to kindergarten age, are more proficient at language awareness through foreign language immersion. The Perspective Of Independent Professional Evaluators

Obtaining An Independent Perspective...

In this section we will cover "Little Pim" from a professional point of view. To accomplish that task we have called upon the assistance of two top industry professionals who know their stuff and have the credentials to prove it.

Our professional and independent evaluators will form their own opinions and produce detailed, in-depth reports connected with their study and evaluation of Little Pim. The information to follow is comprised of excerpts from those same reports which have been paraphrased in order to encapsulate the primary points being conveyed in each report. This approach provides a completely independent perspective in the evaluation of Little Pim.




Professor of Educational Studies, Ed. - Immersion Education, (L2)

"Before I go any further I would like to call attention to the fact that there is nothing new in the phenomenon of 'immersing' students in a second language (L2) instructional environment. If anything else that stands beyond question, L2 instruction has been the primary, not secondary method chosen to use. The creator of Little Pim has taken L2 instruction to a more refined method of use specific for early childhood development and education.

The overview of L2 using Little Pim has been quite conclusive over the 11 week period of my evaluation. The children in my first test group, where standard repetitive word method of teaching Spanish was used, had very little progressive improvement in their L2 skills. The children in my second test group where Little Pim was being used, gained a substantial fluency, level of basic phrase, and word literacy in Spanish. There appeared to be no apparent down turn to their native language development in any form. There was a very marked effect not only in the verbal communication skills of the children, but also an improvement in their self-assurance.

Little Pim uses an exceptional lesson structure of animation and live action. This combination is essential in working with the range of ages for which Little Pim is designed to reach. Little Pim adopts the use of simple words and phrases which are introduced to the children in consistent periodic intervals. This helps to expand the attention span of the children watching the DVD extensively. At the same time it helps provide the essential building blocks which are needed for an expedient rate of language acquisition.

"Little Pim has an excellent alignment of instructional design with language learning. The 'Parent Guide' which comes with each DVD of the series, provides a very informative source of information for a parent or teacher to quickly gain a basic understanding of Little Pim, the idea of total immersion language learning, while encouraging simultaneous interaction with the child and mother/teacher in the process.

The sequence and the organization of the lessons was quite effective. The transition between audio stimulation, visual illustration of application of a task or object with real people, and the animated black/white panda character was seamless. The black/white color scheme of the panda character fits with the colors which early childhood age children can most easily recognize and retain in memory. The children I worked with in my evaluation of Little Pim showed a remarkably fast acquisition of the words and phrases they were learning with fair comprehension of what was being spoken when using the words or phrases with the pre-school children, but even better with the toddlers.



Consumers Call It The Way It Is

Nothing is more powerful than hands-on experience by a consumer with a product when it is being evaluated. Based upon that fact we put every single product we evaluate at the mercy of consumers in a hands-on evaluation where anything goes. Shall we see how Little Pim was seen with consumers?

We took a different approach yet again, this time with Little Pim. Considering both in-house and independent evaluation testing had been done, we wanted to see what impact a brief, 15 minute or less exposure with Little Pim would have.
We took Little Pim along with a number of other products to a the Thousand Oaks Mall in Thousand Oaks, CA, along with a laptop and 20" screen LCD monitor to display the DVD products. It seemed before we even setup that mothers were asking if they could pick up the packages for the Little Pim DVD's for Spanish and look at them or inquire if we had any information on it available. It was explained to the mothers that we were setting up our table and gave them an info sheet which explained about our evaluation process, etc.

After we were all setup, we had an abundant number of mothers and children come to see all of the products and have a chance to get a hands-on experience with them. At first there was a small number of parents paying attention to Little Pim being displayed on our bright LCD screen, but once the first child and mother interacted with the program and completed their experience with Little Pim, that changed dramatically.
Although there were plenty of kids and parents looking at the abundant number of other products we brought for consumers to look at, Little Pim was so popular that we had a waiting list which had people signed up for slots almost two hours later! Who ever would have imagined waiting that long for only 15 minutes with a DVD program! Well, the facts speak for themselves.

We had plenty of feedback forms from the parents and children to look over when it was time to pack up and go. One of the mothers made a special note of "I can't believe how fast my little pumpkin learned some Spanish words! She kept repeating some of those words to me and pointing at the screen while we looked at your product." Just imagine a pre-school child learning and retaining words from a second language so quickly and so simply!

In reviewing all of the feedback forms and the video tapes from the hands-on evaluation of Little Pim, we found that every single parent was quite happy with it. So many compliments about how their child learned so much, how much more fun it was to work with their child with Little Pin in comparison to other learning products they had used. This made our evaluation of Little Pim and the reading of all of the feedback forms so much more enjoyable. Little Pim passed this section of our evaluation with the highest level of scoring and positive reports.

The content quality for Little PIM was nothing short of stupendous! All of our staff are familiar with total immersion method of teaching for foreign languages, yet never imagined it being applied to an age range of from infants to preschoolers. The lesson structure was great and passed every facet of our evaluation for content quality with the highest levels of scoring.

Little PIM contributes to critical skill development in ways which we never had considered coming into this product evaluation and the results that come from use of the product are more than apparent in our videotapes and report details within our evaluation. Little PIM pulls a perfect score in this evaluation category.

Little PIM is quite different from most infant/pre-school products we have reviewed over the years yet it was well worth the effort. Innovative design in products today is an absolute must. Little PIM has taken the word innovation to an entirely new platform of design standards in second language teaching methods. Little PIM is one limited few products which truly define what the word "innovation" is all about and stimulates others to go one step further in product design and development.


FUNFACTOR™: Rating Level - [3] an image of 5 gold stars

FUNFACTOR™ is a term created and used by our publication to identify if a product contributes to the creation of smiles and laughter from use of it. Little PIM was determined to create an average level of FunFactor™ due to the fact of it being designed for immersive learning. This type of learning when it comes to foreign languages is built upon a more serious structure of learning methodology where "fun" is not a primary element.

When we looked over our videos and read the consumer hands-on evaluation sheets, we identified how Little PIM does not provide enough evidence of FunFactor™ to bring its scoring in this category above the average level. Little PIM completed the evaluation in this category for FUNFACTOR™ with a score of [3] Stars.

Determining the response level for children while using Little PIM was quite simple. In every environment in which children experienced use of Little PIM in our evaluation, the results were unquestionable as far as response level goes. The children all showed the strongest level of response imaginable, well beyond what was expected.

To put the icing on the cake, the response level was even more clearly defined from the level of retention and actual use of what was learned from Little PIM, long after the experience the children had with it. Little PIM pulls a perfect score in this evaluation category.

In a sense, Response Level and Skill Improvement with Little PIM go hand in hand; one compliments the other with a very fine line between the two. Once again, in every environment in which children experienced use of Little PIM in our evaluation, the results were unquestionable, this time for skill improvement.

The children all showed the strongest level of skill improvement imaginable, well beyond what was expected and even to the pint where several days after their experience with Little PIM, mothers of some of the participants have called us to express how their children are still using the words and phrases learned and are eager to learn more. Little PIM pulls the highest score possible in this evaluation category.

Little PIM comes in with a perfect score of [5] Five Stars in this category for SKILL IMPROVEMENT.

 


VISUAL APPEAL: Rating Level - [5] an image of 5 gold  stars

When it comes to visual appeal, Little PIM was not the greatest from an adult perspective, according to the results from our surveys we conducted with participants in our evaluation segments. At the same time, it is important to know that the product was not designed for adults! From the perspective of a child and from the analytical perspective of pre-school teachers and other professionals involved in early childhood development, Little PIM "...had the perfect mix of color, visual appeal, and information." Little PIM pulls a perfect score in this category.
